Payment schedule rules: how the date is set

The date is not random and it is not negotiable. Two rules determine it: the month of entitlement and the day of the month you were born.

Social Security benefits are paid one month after the month they cover, on a Wednesday chosen by birth date: the second Wednesday for days 1–10, the third for 11–20, and the fourth for 21–31. SSI is paid on the 1st of the month it covers.

One month in arrears

Social Security is paid after the fact. A benefit is earned for a calendar month and paid in the following month. If you become entitled in March, your first payment is for March and is deposited in April.

This is why the first payment always seems late. Applications are typically filed a few months before the desired start month, and the deposit lands four to six weeks after the month being paid for. It is also why the annual COLA, effective for December benefits, shows up in the January deposit.

The Wednesday rule

Retirement, survivor, and disability benefits are paid on a Wednesday determined by the birth date of the worker on whose record the benefit is paid.

Birth date Payment day Typical window
1st – 10th Second Wednesday 8th – 14th
11th – 20th Third Wednesday 15th – 21st
21st – 31st Fourth Wednesday 22nd – 28th

Weeks are counted within the month, not the year, so the actual date shifts from month to month. A fourth Wednesday can fall as late as the 28th; it cannot fall later, because no month has five full weeks before the 29th.

These Wednesdays are not moved for federal holidays. A payment dated the 24th is paid on the 24th even if a holiday falls that week.

Because payment for a month arrives in the next one, a COLA effective for December benefits first appears in the January deposit. The date itself does not shift — the same Wednesday rule applies — only the amount changes. Recipients who track income month to month sometimes record the increase as a January event rather than a December one.

SSI runs on a different clock

Supplemental Security Income is paid on the first of the month for that same month, not in arrears. Because the date is fixed to the calendar rather than to a weekday, it collides with weekends and holidays, and SSA moves it earlier: payment is made on the preceding business day.

The consequence is a quirk that regularly confuses recipients. When the first of a month falls on a Saturday, the payment arrives on the preceding Friday, which is in the prior month. Two payments can then land in one calendar month, with none in another. The annual total is unaffected.

If a payment is missing

A missing deposit is usually a banking issue rather than an SSA issue, and the sequence matters: confirm the date on the schedule first, then check for a changed bank account or a returned deposit, then contact SSA. A payment that arrives a day late is normal for financial institutions that post ACH credits in batches. Direct deposit posts on the scheduled date; paper checks clear at the bank’s convenience, not SSA’s. Only a payment absent after three business days past its scheduled date warrants a call.

Questions

Why is my first Social Security payment for a month I have not finished?

It is not. Benefits accrue for a month and are paid the following month, so a January benefit arrives in February. The payment covers the prior month, not the current one.

What day of the month do I get paid?

If you were born on the 1st through the 10th, the second Wednesday. The 11th through the 20th, the third Wednesday. The 21st through the 31st, the fourth Wednesday.

Is SSI paid on the same schedule?

No. SSI is paid on the first of the month for that same month. When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment moves to the preceding business day.

Do Wednesday payments move for holidays?

No. The Wednesday schedule is fixed and is not shifted for federal holidays, unlike first-of-month payments.
